I research and bet Southern California maiden races. On June 25, 2008, I started with an imaginary bankroll of $50,000 and I'm trying to bet my way to $100,000 by June 25, 2009.

The highlight of the day was the huge race by Midshipman to win the Del Mar Futurity, which was the eighth time Bob Baffet has won the race. Baffert, who took the Futurity seven straight years from 1996-2002, said afterward that he had complete confidence in Midshipman to get the job done.
He hinted that we might see the Futurity winner in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
In the Futurity, I bet $700 and profited $4,410 when Midshipman was ignored at the windows and paid $14.60.

2008-09 -- My $50,000 year
In the spirit of the book "My $50,000 Year at the Races," I will start off with an imaginary bankroll of $50,000 and attempt to reach $100,000 by June 25, 2009.
In 1978, Andrew Beyer published "My $50,000 Year at the Races" after experiencing, in 1977, a dizzying year that took him on the roller coaster ride of winning $10,000 one day, while another day being so frustrated that he bashed a hole in the Gulfstream press box wall.
When the ride stopped, Beyer had won $50,664 from just $8,000. Hopefully, I can dupicate his year -- minus the hole in the wall.

- Many horseplayers look at a full field of 2-year-old maidens and, with such little information to go on, they get a headache and run straight for the aspirin bottle -- or worse yet, the whiskey bottle. They don't know where to start or what to do. But I've compiled information that is not found in the Daily Racing Form, so I can tell which first timers are worth wagering on, which speed horses will give you the best run for your money, and who's likely to come out smoking off a long layoff. I specialize in maiden sprint races on the Southern California main track. I use pace ratings, data bases, speed figures, profiles, models and race replays. All of my bets are made in the win pool using a value-based approach. Originally from Boston, Mass., I moved to Las Vegas in 1994. After earning a bachelor's degree in journalism from UMass-Amherst in 1990, I worked as a daily newspaper reporter in Fort Dodge, IA from 1992-94 and in San Diego, Calif. from 1995-96. I've been toiling in the Las Vegas race & sports books industry since 1996.
